What I Believe

I am a pro-life, pro-family conservative Republican candidate for State Board of Education, District 10. I believe in a rigorous, knowledge-based education that teaches:

an unashamedly patriotic view of American history, emphasizing the God-given individual rights and limited government enshrined in the Constitution,

   computational mathematics, not "fuzzy" math,

   phonics, grammar and writing, and

rigorous science in which students learn to analyze, evaluate and critique all scientific theories.

I have a track record of providing the conservative leadership needed on the State Board of Education (SBOE) and have been working for many years for our conservative principles.

When the science curriculum was under consideration by the SBOE last year, I authored the Republican Party of Texas (RPT) resolution supporting the adoption of new, rigorous science standards by the SBOE that permit students to think for themselves and ask questions about scientific theories like evolution and man-made global warming.  When adoption of the new science standards was in doubt, I helped coordinate grassroots calls supporting their adoption.  These efforts proved successful, and the excellent new science standards were adopted by the SBOE by a vote of 13-2.

I also wrote the RPT resolutions outlining the RPT’s legislative priorities for the last Texas legislative session and helped author the Texas Conservative Coalition's Pledge with Texans, which outlines the policy goals of the conservative members of the Texas House of Representatives.

When SB1440 passed the Texas House and Senate during the last legislative session, I joined other conservative leaders in calling on Gov. Perry to veto this dangerous bill, which would have empowered Child Protective Services (CPS) to take away a child to investigate a claim of abuse without a hearing.  After Gov. Perry vetoed the bill, I met with Rep. Madden and members of CPS to discuss alternative measures that would respect parental rights.

I want to put my experience as a proven conservative leader to work for you on the State Board of Education.  I would be honored to have your support and ask for your vote during early voting (February 16-26) or on March 2.

For Texas schoolchildren,

Brian

An Education for Freedom

By Brian Russell, SBOE District 10 Candidate

brian-russellWhere are we as a nation? (Are you ready for a little “tough love”?) We have a Congress that thinks its OK to trample our Constitution underfoot and “deem” a bill passed rather than voting on it because they are ashamed to have a roll call vote that puts their name on the bill. Read the full article at TexasInsider.org

OPINION: State Board of Education: The Imperative of Conservative Leadership

By Brian Russell, State Board of Education Candidate, Dist. 10

School-testDuring this 2010 election cycle, voters will select eight of the 15 members of the State Board of Education (SBOE), which sets statewide public education policy for grades K-12.  To further the progress made by the seven conservative Republican members currently serving on the SBOE, we must return strong conservative Republican leaders to the SBOE. Read the full article at TexasInsider.org

OPINION: Perry Should be Applauded for Just Saying “No”!

By Brian Russell, State Board of Education Candidate, District 10

perry-sha2Governor Rick Perry is to be commended for refusing federal educational funds from the $4 billion Race to the Top (R2T) fund established by President Obama & Secretary of Education Duncan.  In a down economy, and facing a budget shortfall in the next legislative session, the over $700 million in federal funds potentially “available” to Texas from the Race to the Top fund could have been a temptation to Gov. Perry. Read the full article at TexasInsider.org
